Doctor of Philosophy in Counselor Education and Supervision
The PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision (CES) program prepares the next generation of leaders moving the counseling profession forward by training new counselors and supervisors, researching effective clinical interventions, and providing influential leadership in organizations. The program aims to prepare doctoral students to become culturally-affirming counselor educators and supervisors. The PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision program strives to advance the counseling professions into the future by training leaders who promote anti-oppressive pedagogy, scholarship, supervision, advocacy, and practice. The curriculum and educational experiences, such as the multiple article dissertation and internship program, prepare students for the real, day-to-day work of counselor educators.
The program curriculum consists of in person and online components. Students must reside in California within sufficient proximity to the University to permit participation in all in-person activities and utilization of campus resources.
Degree Requirements
In order to graduate, students must successfully complete 91.5 units of study, as well as meet the professional and dispositional requirements of a counseling professional.
Students in all counseling program areas complete courses designed to meet program requirements specified by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) and the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS).
Students are required to complete a 600-hour doctoral-level internship during their program. Students will meet with their advisor to establish an internship plan in which Counseling and at least two of the following areas will be of focus: Teaching, Research & Scholarship, Leadership, and Supervision; no more than 200 hours may be accrued in each area. Students will be enrolled in COUN750: Applied Professional Practice and Issues in CES over a three-quarter period. The internship hours must be completed over these three quarters.
Students are required to complete a multiple article dissertation. The multiple article dissertation format is designed to help students launch their scholarship career early. Instead of a traditional dissertation, students will organize research into two publishable manuscripts and one research proposal. The curriculum is designed to help students be successful by providing intentional research opportunities from the beginning of the program. The dissemination of knowledge holds significant importance in the counseling profession.
