Student Professional Behavior and Use of Technology
Palo Alto University (PAU) is committed to maintaining a professional and focused learning environment. This policy outlines expectations for students' use of technology in both in-person and virtual classrooms. In all PAU classes, including those conducted via Zoom, electronic devices must be used solely for classroom-relevant activities such as note-taking, presentations, or instructor-advised internet access. Personal, non-academic use of devices during class time is considered unprofessional and disruptive. This includes browsing unrelated websites, checking personal emails, or engaging in any activity unrelated to the class.
For remote classes held online (i.e., zoom), students are expected to maintain the same level of professionalism as in physical classrooms, which includes keeping cameras on when required, using appropriate virtual backgrounds, and refraining from engaging in distracting activities visible on camera.
Additionally, for online tests and quizzes, students may be required to use the Respondus LockDown Browser and initiate the video recording feature (i.e., Respondus Monitor) to ensure academic integrity. Students found misusing devices, behaving unprofessionally during class, or failing to comply with online testing protocols may face consequences including grade penalization, Academic Training Committee (ATC) referral, or Student Evaluation Committee (SEC) referral for consideration of further disciplinary action.
PAU recognizes that technology is an integral part of modern education; however, its use must not interfere with the learning process or show disrespect to instructors and fellow students. Students are encouraged to fully engage in class discussions and activities, using technology to enhance rather than detract from their educational experience. Students are responsible for familiarizing themselves with this policy and adhering to it throughout their time at PAU. If there are any questions or need for clarification regarding appropriate technology use or online testing procedures, students should consult with their instructors or academic advisors.
