Social Media Policy and Computer Network Usage Policy
Palo Alto University (PAU) recognizes the significant role of social media in modern communication like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Twitter, blogs, and wikis. Students are expected to exercise professional judgment in their online activities, adhering to the ethical and professional standards set forth by the American Psychological Association and the American Counseling Association. PAU promotes open and transparent dialogue online, but students must be aware that their social media presence can impact their professional and academic standing. Content posted on social media may be considered when evaluating a student's appropriateness for the profession. Prohibited content includes any information about clients, derogatory comments about supervisors, faculty, PAU programs, or practicum/internship sites, and any posts that present the student in an unprofessional or inappropriate light. While PAU respects students' rights to express personal beliefs, it is crucial to do so in a manner that maintains professionalism and does not compromise the integrity of the university or the field of study. Students should be mindful that expressing extreme or divisive views online may affect their professional relationships and future career prospects. Such content may lead to disciplinary action or termination from practicum or internship placements. Students should think critically before posting content related to their academic or professional activities and consider the potential long-term impacts on their careers. When in doubt, consulting with faculty or supervisors about appropriate social media use is advised. Violations of this policy may result in disciplinary action within the university, termination from placements, and potential impacts on future professional opportunities. Students are encouraged to familiarize themselves with and adhere to these guidelines throughout their time at PAU and in their future professional careers.
In addition, the use of Palo Alto University's network and computer resources should support the essential missions of the University in teaching, learning, and research. Users of Palo Alto University's network and computer resources ("users") are responsible for appropriately using and protecting information resources and for respecting the rights of others. Considering historical, current, and any future world affairs circumstances that may affect all community members at PAU, this policy includes restraining from the use of offensive Zoom backgrounds, using explicit language on CANVAS that peers and colleagues may find offensive or inappropriate, as it applies to all of the fields of study at PAU. This computer Social Media Policy and Computer Network Usage policy guidelines call for the appropriate use of information resources given the ethical standards and practices of the fields of study offered at PAU.
