MTHD809 Qualitative Research Methods in Psy chology

This course is an introduction to qualitative research methodologies and their application in the field of psychology. The course will cover the interplay between the philosophy of science including how ontological, epistemological, axiological, rhetorical, and methodological assumptions underscore all of knowledge production. Common paradigms used in qualitative and mixed methods research will be discussed (i.e., positivism, post-positivism, constructivism-interpretivism, and critical-ideological). The first goal of this course is to teach students to consider how research paradigms and theoretical underpinnings influence qualitative research methodologies. The second goal of this course is to allow students to experientially learn different commonly used qualitative research methodologies and ascertain how to evaluate their research quality and rigor. The third goal of this course is to improve knowledge of various types of data collection techniques in qualitative research. The last goal of this course is to discuss ethical considerations in doing qualitative research and considerations for publishing qualitative research manuscripts.
