Students Participating in Faculty Research

PAU is a not-for-profit public benefit organization that is solely dedicated to education, training, and research in the mental and behavioral health sciences. PAU faculty members are employed by the University in its public benefit capacity to teach students and to perform research within areas of their professional interests. Students come to PAU for classroom, clinical, and experiential learning. Faculty research can provide opportunities for students to volunteer to gain experiential learning.

When Funding Is Available for Students to Participate in Faculty Research: At times, funds are available through sponsored research grants, federal or state work-study funding programs, or other sources, to provide payment to students in faculty research groups or labs.

When There is No Identified Funding for Students in Faculty Research: At other times, there is no available source of funds for students who want to work in faculty research groups or labs. In these situations, students are allowed to participate in research as an official volunteer who donates time for purely educational and charitable purposes and is not an employee, nor is there any expectation to earn any wages or benefits, other than the learning experience.

For All Students Participating in Faculty Research: Whether a student participating in faculty research is a part-time employee or is a volunteer, the student agrees that the intellectual property rights, such as copyright, patents and commercial licensing and/or employment and/or other income opportunities derived from the faculty research or from the student’s participation in the research, solely belongs to the University and not to student. Students who volunteer conform to PAU’s conduct expectations in the student handbook.
