CLIN508 Introduction to Psychotherapy
The main objective of the course is to introduce students to the basic concepts of psychotherapy. Both the common and specific factors, grounded on the principles of evidence-based psychotherapy. Within the field of clinical psychology, there are questions regarding whether psychotherapy training should focus on common principles of change or specific treatment protocols. The answer is that training should focus on both. Accordingly, this course adopts a dimensional approach to training that integrates both principles and protocols. The course integrates an overview of the scientific methodology used to evaluate treatment effectiveness, research on relationship and technical factors, manual-based approaches, and case formulation. Accordingly, the course is consistent with the parameters defining practitioner-scientist training, APA guidelines, and current standards of clinical practice. After completing the course requirements, students may expect to gain a rudimentary sense of how to implement treatment with a range of psychopathology ? including depression, anxiety, eating disorders, personality and interpersonal problems.
